Some of my friends have asked me for the contact of the art teacher I’m learning from. Others said, “Let me know when you go—I’d love to join.” I share the information when they ask, because I believe even a fleeting curiosity deserves a gentle response.

But I no longer expect them to act. Because I’ve come to understand: the journey from wanting to doing is long—and not everyone is on that road right now.
What psychology says about the gap between intention and action
In behavioral psychology, this phenomenon is referred to as the intention-action gap. It describes the space between what we say we want and what we actually do. It’s a space filled with competing priorities, limited energy, and sometimes, a lack of internal motivation.
There are a few reasons why this gap exists:
Wanting is a surface. Caring is a world.
It’s easy to say we want to draw. But to actually attend a class, practice regularly, stay through the frustrations—that only happens when there is real care behind the desire.
Someone may say they want to work out, but if evening gatherings or luxury shopping are more aligned with their current joy, then the workout will stay in the background. And that’s okay.
We all live within different maps of concern. For one, it’s career and finance. For another, it’s self-discovery and art. No map is better. No rhythm is superior. They’re just different.
And so, I no longer rush to persuade.
When someone asks, I share. But I don’t follow up or insist. Not because I don’t care—but because I respect their timing.
Each person is walking within the architecture of their own interests. Some face outward—towards status, speed, visibility. Others move inward—towards meaning, reflection, slow cultivation.
No one is wrong. No one is lost. They’re simply living what they care most about right now.
And when someone truly cares, they will find their own way there—without pressure, without reminders.
Until then, we wait gently. With openness, not urgency.
